Madina Hussein, a mother of four young children who are ages 15,14,9, and 7, founded African Boys and Girls Can lead nonprofit organization. Madina has a remarkable journey that has shaped her commitment to helping youth overcome obstacles and build brighter futures.

Madina immigrated to the United States in 1999 and settled in San Diego, California. Growing up in a poor neighborhood plagued by drugs, gangs, and gun violence, she faced numerous challenges. Despite the difficult circumstances, Madina remained resilient and maintained a positive mindset. Being African in a culturally diverse environment presented its own challenges, as she often faced discrimination and pressure from diverse groups and gangs. Madina’s determination to bring about change led her to join various youth programs.

During her middle school and high school years, Madina actively participated in initiatives such as Best Bodies, where she worked with disabled youth, children of the peace movements and the Police Youth Academy, where she aimed to educate and raise awareness about gang violence, drug abuse, and gun violence prevention. She also dedicated her weekends to volunteering in city cleanup projects to stay out of trouble Madina’s involvement extended to programs like GEAR

GEAR UP Youth Leadership, where she helped clean schools and streets, and the Communities. Madina also joined community Health and medical practice Youth Leadership program, where she interned at sharp metropolitan hospital in San Diego, where she works in the department of patient relation because or her unique personality.

Madina’s desire to address violence and promote cultural competency in her high school led her to join the school’s cultural dance program. Through dance and music, she and other youth worked to end racial segregation and violence, fostering a more inclusive and harmonious environment.

Driven by her passion for youth development, Madina pursued a career in child development. She obtained a child daycare management certification, which allowed her to become a daycare provider. She also took useful courses such as domestic violence and rape survivor classes and earned certificate. Recognizing the importance of transferring her knowledge to her community, Madina also educated women in African communities on becoming childcare providers, providing them with an opportunity to earn income while staying at home with their children. She strongly believes in the significance of good parenting and parental involvement in the lives of young boys and girls.

After relocating to Minnesota, Madina observed the devastating impact of drugs, gun violence, and homelessness on the local youth. Drawing from her own experiences, she recognized the need for effective strategies to address these pressing issues. Over the course of two years, Madina studied the situation in Minnesota and decided to create programs and clubs that would engage youth in drug abuse prevention, gun violence prevention, and combatting youth homelessness.

While Madina is determined to make a difference, her greatest obstacle lies in securing the necessary funds to implement successful programs. Nevertheless, her unwavering dedication drives her to seek creative solutions and forge partnerships to ensure the success of these initiatives. Through African Boys and Girls Can Lead, Madina aims to provide youth with the support, guidance, and resources they need to overcome challenges and build successful futures.

Madina, the founder of African Boys and Girls Can lead, holds an associate degree in social work and aspires to continue her education. Her individual experiences have been marked by heartbreaking losses, including close family who was killed by someone who was intoxicated on drugs and close friends who struggled with drugs, homelessness, and mental illness. Some of her childhood classmates have fallen victim to prostitution and sex trafficking, driven by the desire to escape discrimination and violence at home.

Madina’s life experiences have fueled her determination to create lasting change and provide opportunities for disadvantaged youth. Through her nonprofit organization, she is committed to empowering young people and breaking the cycle of drug abuse, gun violence, and homelessness. Madina’s compassion, resilience, and dedication make her an inspiring advocate for the youth in her community.
